A library, not a shop.
Athene Newsletter No. 1 · September 2026 · by Aditya Sreedhar
Every reading app wants to sell you the next book. Athene has nothing to sell and no shop to send you to. It opens the books you already own, lays them out properly, and then gets out of the way.
Pages, not scrolls
EPUB and PDF are paginated rather than poured into a scrolling column: hyphenated, justified, one column in portrait and two in landscape, turned with a swipe or a tap in the margin. Change the typeface, the size, the measure or the leading in the middle of a chapter and the words reflow under your thumb without losing your place.
Three reading lights, and only three: White, Sepia and Night. The app around them follows the hour unless you say otherwise. Press and hold to highlight a passage or attach a note; bookmarks, the table of contents and search across the whole book are one tap from the page.
Your calibre server, on the shelf
Point Athene at the calibre-web or OPDS library you run and the whole shelf is there to browse as if it were already on the device. Search by author, series or format, pull a book down over your own network, and nothing passes through anybody else on the way.
Covers come out of the books themselves. Arrange the shelf by hand, group books into collections, and switch to a list when the shelf gets long.
Ask the Owl
The Owl answers questions about the passage in front of you: who this character is, what that word meant in 1890, what you have already been told about the feud you are reading. It runs on your own device with Apple Intelligence, against an Ollama server you run, or with a provider key you bring yourself.
Athene names which of the three is answering on the line above every reply, and asks before it sends anything anywhere for the first time. On the device, nothing leaves at all.
Still on iOS 6
An iPad 4 that reads perfectly well is not going to get a new App Store. Athene for iOS 6 is the iBooks shelf as it was — the wood, the page curl, the Aa popover — with highlights, notes, search and your calibre library, free from Adi’s Repo.
Free, and it stays free
Everything Athene does today is free: the reader, the library, the Owl, your calibre server, your highlights and your notes. That is written into the source, not into a launch offer. Anything sold later has to be something new, never a lock put back on what was already yours. Athene is with App Review now.
