Athene reached the App Store on 22 September 2026, and it has been updated every week or so since. Everything here is free, and stays free.

Athene 3.4.7

3 November 2026

Athene is in French, Italian and Spanish, and follows the language your iPhone or iPad is set to; Listen reads Spanish books too, in two natural voices. A book tapped on the shelf opens out of its cover, and on iPhone a book’s page in the Bookstore or Calibre grows to fill the screen as you scroll. The Bookstore’s free classics say how easy they are to read and what they’re about, a Zotero paper wears its first page as its cover, and PDFs always slide when you turn the page.

Athene 3.4.6

1 November 2026

The Athene Bookstore, on the Library’s +: free classics from Project Gutenberg and Standard Ebooks and, with a US App Store account, DRM-free books to buy and keep. It takes the place of Open Shelf and Book Stores in Add Books. An OPDS catalog such as calibre-web now connects even when its address leaves off http://.

Athene 3.4.5

31 October 2026

In Calibre, tap Select, or touch and hold a book, to pick several books, or whole authors, series and tags, and download them together, two at a time; a batch of more than 20 books or 250 MB asks first. A calibre book’s page now opens as a card that grows out of its cover: swipe sideways for the next book in the row, or pull down to put it away. Zotero shows in Settings once you’ve signed in from Add Books, and Monthly Specials is gone from Extras.

Athene 3.4.4

30 October 2026

KOReader sync works with any KOReader sync server, like CrossPoint on an Xteink, to keep your place in each book in step; your own Athene server still keeps your highlights, notes and books too, and the guide shows how to set up an Xteink or sign in to a server you already use. Add Books says what each way in does, and Calibre and Zotero show when they’re connected. On an iPad with a keyboard, the arrow keys and the space bar turn the page, in PDFs too, and keep working after you tap it.

Athene 3.4.3

29 October 2026

Collections is cleaner: your shelves sit at the top, and Authors, Calibre Tags, Series and Formats each open a page of their own. Sort sits beside Search, and turns green when your library is sorted, so you can tell at a glance.

Athene 3.4.2

28 October 2026

Sort the shelf in your own order or by title, author, series or what you read last, with Series and Authors in Collections and every series in reading order. A book’s series, and calibre’s tags, come from the EPUB itself. Ask the Owl from a PDF highlight or the dictionary card, and Files no longer adds a book twice.

Athene 3.4.1

27 October 2026

More Languages on the Listening sheet, PDFs edge to edge on iPad, and a page button for PDFs, with one page or two on an iPad running iOS 27.

Athene 3.4

27 October 2026

Your papers from Zotero: My Library and your groups, a paper’s PDF or EPUB on your shelf, its highlights and notes in step with Zotero both ways, and Cite in eight styles or any on zotero.org. Listen reads French and Italian. On iPad each page of a spread carries its number, and on iPhone Duo the book’s cover can show when you fold it shut.

Athene 3.3.2

24 October 2026

Export Book gives you any book back as a file: an EPUB, or a PDF as it came. Pages turn with the arrow keys, Page Up and Page Down, or two fingers across a trackpad.

Athene 3.3

21 October 2026

Open it like a book on iPhone Duo: two facing pages across the fold, a note on the facing page, the Notebook split at the fold. Pages documents become books on the way in, and PDFs show two pages side by side where there’s room, on iPad from iOS 27. Settings › Extras holds the things you turn on yourself, Free Books is now Open Shelf, and Listen runs from 0.5x to 2.5x.

Athene 3.2.5

13 October 2026

Pick a whole folder in Files, such as a calibre library in iCloud Drive or Dropbox, and every book comes in with calibre’s titles, covers and tags, the tags as collections. The book you’re reading wears a bookmark on the shelf, with a Continue reading line under the Library’s title, and every book has About This Book.

Athene 3.2

8 October 2026

The Notebook: every highlight, note and drawing from every book in one tab, with filters, search and reflections, and any note out as text or a PDF. Listen reads PDFs, skipping the running heads and describing the pictures. KOReader sync keeps your e-reader in step, calibre’s own highlights come into Athene, and a passage in another language translates.

Athene 3.1

3 October 2026

Highlights and notes in PDFs, as in books. An address typed without a port finds calibre by itself, and a connection that fails says why. Collections take books in bulk, and rename or go on a long press.

Athene 3.0

2 October 2026

Listen: any book read aloud by a natural voice on your own device, with the screen locked. Notes typed or drawn, ink on PDFs with Apple Pencil, a dictionary that works offline, iCloud Sync, and any Google Font on any paper colour. Add Books brings free classics from Project Gutenberg, books from your computer over Wi‑Fi, and MOBI, Word and more, made into books as they arrive.

Athene 2.1

25 September 2026

calibre becomes a home: Recently Added, Next in Your Series, More by the author and a page for every book, at home or over Tailscale or another VPN. PDFs pinch to zoom, and on iPad the tabs sit at the top.

Athene 1.0

22 September 2026

Athene arrives on the App Store: EPUB and PDF laid out as real pages, your calibre library, highlights, notes and bookmarks, and the Owl. Free.
