Zotero

Connect your Zotero library and read your papers in Athene. Your highlights and notes go back to Zotero as its own annotations, and Cite gives you the reference in the style you need.

Connecting

Tap + on the Library, then Zotero, and Sign In. You sign in on zotero.org itself and tap Accept, so Athene never sees your password.

To use an API key instead, tap Use it instead, then Make a Key on zotero.org: it opens with the right boxes ticked (your library, notes and writing). Paste the key, 24 letters and numbers, into API Key.

Browsing and downloading

Zotero opens on My Library, your groups and what you added most recently. Inside a library are its collections and All Items, newest first. Search by title, author or year.

Tap the arrow on a paper, or Add to Library on its page, to download its PDF or EPUB. Highlights you already made in Zotero come with it. When an item can’t be downloaded, its row says why: it has no PDF or EPUB, it’s a web page snapshot or a link, or its file is linked on your computer, or not yet uploaded to zotero.org.

Cite

On a paper’s page, Cite shows its reference and its in-text citation, each with a button to copy it. Choose the style from the menu: APA (the one Athene starts with), Chicago (Author-Date), Chicago (Notes), Harvard, IEEE, MLA, Nature or Vancouver, more under More Styles, or Another Style… for any style on zotero.org/styles. Athene remembers your choice.

What goes back to Zotero

For papers you downloaded from Zotero in Athene, highlights and underlines, with their notes, go both ways as Zotero’s own annotations, in matching colours. Edits and removals follow. Changes travel a few seconds after you make them, and when you open or leave a paper. Athene talks to zotero.org directly; there’s no server of Athene’s in between.

Settings › Sync › Zotero shows how sync stands, with Sync with Zotero to pause it.

Files on WebDAV

If Zotero keeps your files on your own WebDAV server rather than in Zotero Storage, open Settings › Sync › Zotero › Files on WebDAV and enter the same address, username and password as Zotero on your computer, under its Settings › Sync › File Syncing. The address must be https. Athene only reads your files there; it never adds, changes or deletes anything. This is for My Library.

Signing out

Settings › Sync › Zotero › Sign Out stops syncing until you sign in again. The papers you downloaded stay on your shelf with their highlights, and nothing is deleted on zotero.org.
